TE WAKA HIHIRI BLOG
Kia ora koutou.
Our Cultural mapping project of Opepe, led by Perry Fletcher, is near completion. This mahi will certainly add to what has been documented and known about this area, with regards sites of cultural significance. Our report for Opepe Farm Trust – Ngā Tapuwae o Opepe, sheds some light on the māori history of Opepe and its surrounding papakāinga, identifiying threats to existing cultural sites, with recommendations on their mitigation.
I am hopeful that the mātauranga documented in this project will eventually lead to a shift in the way Opepe is and has been portrayed to the public, so that its extensive māori history is given more prominence.
Of importance to note, the date for our walk through the old coach road at Opepe has been delayed until Friday 21st of April, where those interested in a heritage walk are welcome to accompany us. With us on the walk will be Sally Round - an RNZ journalist, who will be making a recording of this hikoi for her program ‘Country Life’.
